About Bristol:

Bristol is a city located in located in the western half of Day County, South Dakota on Section 25 of Bristol Township, on the main line of what is now the BNSF Railway alongside U.S. Route 12.

Similar to many towns of the area and to the Midwest in general, Bristol came into being as a result of railroad expansion. The railroad, which first came through the area in the 1870s, identified the site which would become Bristol as Station #70. C.P. Prior, a district railroad surveyor and townsite agent, was given credit for naming Bristol in 1881. He named the town after Bristol, England.

Population of Bristol in (1890) 199; (1910) 444; (1940) 675; (1970) 470; (1980) 441. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 377.

Bristol is located at 45°20'43" North, 97°45'3" West (45.345237, -97.750783).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 km2 (0.5 mi2). 1.4 km2 (0.5 mi2) of it is land and 1.89% is water.

Bristol Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 377 people, 165 households, and 88 families residing in the city. The population density is 274.6/km2 (718.0/mi2). There are 186 housing units at an average density of 135.5/km2 (354.2/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 100.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 165 households out of which 18.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 4.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.1% are non-families. 40.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 27.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.01 and the average family size is 2.71.

In the city the population is spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 18.0% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 39.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 54 years. For every 100 females there are 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,031, and the median income for a family is $39,375. Males have a median income of $30,208 versus $17,500 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,006. 6.4% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
